Galaxy, Real Salt Lake In MLS Final

• MLS Cup is set for November 22, and the nationally televised prime-time championship match will pit Real Salt Lake against the L.A. Galaxy.

The Galaxy concluded their improbable journey to Major League Soccer's pinnacle with a dominating 2-0 victory November 13 over the Houston Dynamo.

The Utah squad shocked the Cuauhtemoc Blanco-led Chicago Fire by punching a ticket to the Cup thanks to its prowess in penalty kicks. With no score at the end of regulation, Real punched through five goals, to the Fire's four.

MLS Cup 2009 will begin at 5:30PM Pacific at Qwest Field in Seattle, home to the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS's Seattle Sounders FC.

Ticket prices start at $20 for the "no-alcohol section" and go up to $85 for the "best seats" in the house.

Good luck finding tickets from those seats, unless you know a reputable ticket broker. As of mid-afternoon November 19, the best seats available from Ticketmaster were way up in Section 336.

The $25 ticket price, including taxes, does not include the additional cost for binoculars.

Pacquiao Honored With Tequila Toast

  • PaQuí, a new "luxury tequila" brand, is launching a marketing campaign with the key message "Be Happy" by naming new World Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao as its first honoree.
  • "PaQuí" means "to be happy" in the native Aztec language, and the emergence of the Filipino with the similar-sounding name as one of the world's best pound-for-pound boxers provided the perfect start for the tequila, notes Javier Martínez, CEO of PaQuí distiller and importer Tequila Holdings Inc.

Pacquiao has not endorsed the tequila brand, and has not forged any sponsorship ties with PaQuí.

Pacquiao won the WBO welterweight championship in a 12th-round defeat of Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in a HBO Pay-Per-View match held November 14 in Las Vegas.

With the victory, Pacquiao earned his seventh world championship and became the first boxer ever to win in seven different weight divisions.

Hispanic Tennis Scholars Get USTA Boost

  • The U.S. Tennis Association will award an annual Pancho Gonzalez Scholar Athlete Grant of $2,500 to one male and one female high school student of Hispanic heritage for their achievements in the classroom and on the tennis court - in honor of the tennis pioneer and hall-of-famer.
  • The grant was created to recognize Latino students who aspire to reach excellence in both competitive tennis and the academic arena. It's part of the USTA's initiative to grow the game of tennis among Hispanic youth.

The USTA recently honored Gonzalez's life and legacy during an on-court tribute at the 2009 U.S. Open (HispanicSportsBusiness archives 9/11/2009).

Kevin Clayton, Chief Diversity Officer for the USTA, said, "We believe there is potential for extraordinary growth of tennis in Hispanic communities in this country, and the Pancho Gonzalez Scholar Athlete Grant will help realize this potential and hopefully help us find a new generation of Pancho Gonzalezes."

The application deadline for initial Pancho Gonzalez Scholar Athlete Grant is Dec. 31, 2009. The two recipients will be announced in February 2010.
